Urban Decay Sustainable Shadow Box, Review

28 Nov

It’s the Monday after Thanksgiving break.  Lets all take one big collective… sigh.  I hope you guys had a good holiday, I know I had a nice break.  My body hates me for stuffing it with enormous amounts of food, but I suppose it will get over it.  Or it will be fat.  Either way, I guess it’s my decision…

Well I was going through some of my palettes the other day and I came across my Urban Decay Sustainable Shadow Box.  It’s $36.00 and available at Sephora and UrbanDecay.com (**note, I couldnt’ find this on Sephora’s website, but I know I’ve seen it in the store recently).  This was one of my very first purchases from Sephora.  I was immediately drawn to the cute packaging.

Isn’t it adorable?  It’s actually made from bamboo.  The packaging even warns it “may be prone to slight natural splintering.”  Yikes!  I’ve never experienced any splintering, in case you were concerned.

The palette features 10 eyeshadows (0.03 oz ea).

I’ve had this palette for awhile, if you can’t tell….

Lets start with the the first row:

YDK: Described as a “bronzed mocha with golden micro glitter.”

Flipside: Described as “electric teal with blue sheen.”

Grifter: Described as “sheer lavender with lots of silver micro glitter.”

UZI: Described as “metallic silver with big iridescent sparkles.”

Twice Baked: Described as “brownie brown with gold glitter.”

And here’s the second row:

Midnight Cowboy Rides Again: Described as “golden beige with bronze gold and silver glitter.”

Flash: Described as “bright iridescent purple.”

Oil Slick: Described as “black with silver glitter.”

Kiddie Pool: Described as “ocean blue with iridescent glitter.”

Half Baked: Described as “subtle, lustrous bronze.”

My opinion:

The packing:  Cute, yes.  But I would have to say I don’t like it.  The top slides open, and is connected on the top left corner (this is better illustrated if you look at the graphic on their website).  Now that I’ve had it for awhile it feels like it’s starting to disconnect.  I would’ve preferred if it would’ve just opened like a book, fully connected at the top.  Although, I assume they designed it like that because of the bamboo packaging.

The eyeshadows:  As you can see from the descriptions, nearly every eyeshadow contains glitter.  The only ones that don’t contain glitter are Flipside, Flash, and Half Baked, and they all have a shimmer finish.  The glitter in UZI, Midnight Cowboy Rides Again, and Kiddie Pool is so chunky I can’t even use it.  It does not translate well on the eyelid, it looks sparse and has very bad fallout.  One word for these shadows: disaster/crap.

The glitter in Grifter isn’t’ as chunky, but it’s still an eyeshadow that I cannot use.  The fallout is really bad, which is a shame because the lavender color is really nice.

YDK is a nice color, and the glitter is very fine so I don’t experience any fallout.  However, I don’t think there is anything special about the color, it’s one that you see a lot (dark, bronze, shimmer).

Flipside and Flash are the brightest colors in the palette.  I do like these colors and I feel like they are unique.

Half Baked is their classic gold color.  It’s a really nice coppery bronze with a metallic finish, a good one to have in your collection.  I use this color a lot in the tear duct.  It is also featured in a lot of other UD palettes, so you don’t necessarily need to purchase this palette to check it out.

OVERALL:

I would not recommend this palette.  4 of them are the worst eyeshadows I’ve ever used.  I like a few of the shades, but not enough that I would purchase this entire palette again.  (All of these shades are availble for individual purchase, by the way).  Even if you are someone who likes to wear glitter, I think you would have better luck using a pigment or loose glitter over a cream base.

Glitter rating: 2 / 5

Great site! Do you have a cream eye shadow you love? Currently using MAC cream eye shadows but would like to try something new.
