12 Hours With Tarte Foundation

6 Aug

I need another foundation just like I need to hear another Maroon 5 song on the radio (seriously, Payphone? Quit playing it).  But that didn’t stop me from snatching this up from Ulta.I couldn’t resist its 12-hour, full coverage promise.  Also with Tarte being an all natural cruelty free brand, I just had to try it.  Does it live up to my expectations?

It’s the Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Full Coverage Foundation.

Website description:  Get 12 hours of flawless coverage with this long-wearing, skin-perfecting formula with UVA/UVB SPF 15. It’s full coverage with a weightless texture. With a broad range of shades available and a supremely blendable and buildable formula, everyone can achieve skin that looks healthy and natural.

My thoughts:

Packaging:  Squeeze tube with a twist off cap.  It measures 2in across and 4.5in tall (including lid).  I have no complaints about this packaging, I generally prefer tubes because it’s easier to control how much product you dispense.

Color:  There are 8 shades, and the one closest to my NC30 skin is the medium (the 4th darkest).  It’s a disappointing shade selection, it’s really hard to cram everyone’s skin color into 8 shades.  The medium is just a tad dark, but the light medium was just a touch too light for my skin.

Coverage:  Full coverage, just like it promises.  It’s almost like a mask.  A dime sized amount covers the whole face.

Texture/Formula:  It feels mousse-like, it has a light and airy texture to it.  It’s silicone based so it does not settle into your pores (which is a good thing!).

Longevity:  8 hours.

Application:  If you’re looking for a full, opaque coverage, apply with fingers in circular motions all around the face.  After it’s all spread out, run a kabuki or stippling brush all over your face again, in circular motions, to further blend.  If you’re looking for full coverage but want more of an airbrushed finish, put a dime sized about on the back of your hand, dot foundation all over face (forehead,  nose, chin, cheeks), then run your stippling brush in circular motions all over the face to blend in.

Who would like this:  Someone looking for a full coverage matte-finish foundation with SPF.  This is suitable for all skin types (oily girls, just wear a primer underneath).

Who wouldn’t like this:  Someone looking for a light-medium coverage, every day foundation.  I also wouldn’t recommend this for photos due to its content of SPF.

My real disappointment is the shade selection, that’s where it loses the most points with me.  Since this is so full-coverage, it is absolutely vital that the foundation matches the skin perfectly or you look like you’re wearing a mask.  It also doesn’t live up to its 12 hour promise.  I’m pleased to see titanium and zinc oxide as the active ingredients, as they are both UV blockers (opposed to UV absorbers).  Other than that, it’s a great full-coverage matte finish foundation.

Sidenote: This reminds me a lot of MAC’s Studio Sculpt foundation.

Glitter rating:  4 / 5

The Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-hour Full Coverage Foundation is $38.00 for 1.7oz.  You can purchase it at any Tarte retailer or here online.

Have you tried any of Tarte’s foundations?  What do you think of them?
