Canadian Beauty Find: Annabelle Eyeshadow

16 Aug

I went on a road trip to Canada earlier this summer, and being the beauty geek that I am, I was excited to head to the drugstore to check out their cosmetics.  I saw lots of the same brands that we have here in the US, but there was one inexpensive brand that caught my eye.

Annabelle Cosmetics.  Even better?  They were on sale!  I picked up a few unique shades and was happily on my way.  So, did the cheap price mean cheap quality?

Website description:  Bold new colours. Innovative techniques. Brash sophistication. Makeup Junkies across Canada are setting the trends for hot new looks, and Annabelle is right there with her.

More from website:  Annabelle Cosmetics is the Canadian leader in drugstore brand makeup, and has been part of Groupe Marcelle since 1999. Annabelle cosmetics are available at more than 2,000 stores across Canada.

My thoughts:

Packaging:  The eyeshadows come in a compact, but you can also purchase the pan only (there was a special price when I purchased, it was cheaper to buy the compacts rather than the pans).  The compacts are identical to MACs packaging.  They measure 1.5in in length and width, and 3/4in tall.  It feels sturdy and the lids close with a secure “click.”

  • Green (Vert-To-Go):  Dark forest green with subtle golden sheen, frost finish.  Smooth and buttery texture.  It has good color pay off and wears 8 hours with primer.  It’s very similar to MACs Humid.  Glitter rating: 4 / 5
  • Blue (110):  Light sky blue with matte finish.  The formula is a bit dry but has good color payoff.  This wears for 6 hours with primer.  Glitter rating: 2.5 / 5
  • Yellow/gold (118):  Warm, shimmery, golden-yellow.  This has medium color pay off and a dry texture.  This wears for 6 hours with primer.  Glitter rating: 2 / 5
  • Purple (203):   Wisteria purple with matte finish.  The formula is dry and had medium color payoff.  This wears for 6 hours with primer.  Glitter rating: 2.5 / 5

I’m pleasantly surprised by the quality of these eyeshadows.  Vert-To-Go is the best performing shade of the four.  The mattes (110 and 203) have a dry texture but they’re not chalky.  Normally yellow isn’t a very wearable color, but 118 has just enough gold to it so it can be pulled off as a lid or blending color.  It’s not the best eyeshadow I’ve ever used, but it’s pretty solid quality for the price (especially if you catch them on sale, like I did).

Overall Glitter Rating:  2.75 / 5

Annabelle Eyeshadows are available in Canada at any Annabelle retailer.  US residents can order by phone, 1 800 387-7710.  They eyeshadow compacts are $5.00 for 0.53oz.  Check out the Annabelle blog here.

I’m disappointed that I can’t buy Annabelle in the US, I’m definitely interested in trying more of their products!  The brand reminds me a lot of NYX.

Have you tried Annabelle?  What do you think of their products?
