December Birchbox, 2011

29 Dec

My December Birchbox came late, but it finally arrived yesterday.  There were some shipping errors and yada yada yah… I’m not even really upset that it was late.  But alas, here it is my friends.  Behold the Birchbox and all of it’s glory.

See what’s inside!

What is Birchbox?  Every month Birchbox members receive a curated box of luxe beauty samples.  It costs $10 per month.

The company has done a really nice job with their packaging.  It’s like getting a little gift every month!

Product descriptions

The contents in the box

This box includes:

  • 2 double sided tape strips
  • an orange flavored dietary supplement
  • Benefit POREfessional face primer
  • A multi-purpose oil
  • Jouer lip gloss
  • Atelier Cologne

I’m not going to review each product in this post, I just wanted to share the contents and my thoughts on Birchbox.

This is my 5th or 6th Birchbox, and I have to say that the quality of contents has gone down since I first started getting them.  I used to receive full sized products every once in awhile and samples that I was actually excited to try out.  Lately, I received things like granola bars, chocolate samples, and now… double sided tape?  And something to mix in my drink?  I don’t consider those to be “luxe beauty samples.”

I’m sure that I will end up liking some of the things that came in this box, but I’m having a hard time justifying that this is worth my $10.

On another note, Birchbox is donating 100% of their profits this month to Baby Buggy, a non-profit organization that helps families and children in need.  Now that is something I can get behind.  Click image to enlarge.

I have to agree with you that the quality of items has gone hill. I’ve pointed out on my own blog and at Make Up Talk’s forums that Birchbox advertises on their blog and on their site as “Deluxe beauty samples” and “Four to five hand-picked deluxe samples delivered to your door for $10 per month.” Where are these “deluxe” samples?

Several months back I received from Burberry a deluxe sample of their perfume which is probably up to five times more than I get from a Birchbox. I also got it for FREE from the Burberry facebook. For months now the perfume samples have been the vial sizes you can get at most department store counters.

I’m highly disappointed that the perfume samples are so tiny but even more so at the “extra” and “bonus” items like double sided tape (one-time use) or granola bars or even the dietary supplements. The only GOOD thing about Birchbox is you can earn review points which do add up. I’ve been a member since May (first box in June) and I’ve earned over 1000 points (that equals $100 dollars). My daughter who I signed up in June (first box in July, last box in December) only earned 300 points plus an extra 100 because of the December box delay. Too bad those last 100 points didn’t come earlier since she used the 300 points to get a Laura Geller blush. I’ve used my own 1000 points on Birchbox Man for $45 (500 pts) and the remaining 500 points on three items and paid only $5.something out of pocket (also use the BBLOVE promo code for another $20 off $75).

If it weren’t for those points and the fantastic customer service I’ve had with them I would have quit a very long time ago because most of the time the “deluxe” samples are either one-time use products or you can get a few uses out of it. Maybe they should reduce the amount of box variations (between 15 to 22 different boxes each month) and focus on larger sizes (real deluxe samples).

Thanks for the comment! You do bring up a good point, the Birchbox points program is very handy. I’ve been hearing a lot about MyGlam, have you tried that one? It’s the same idea, same price. I’m thinking about switching.

That’s why I’ve always been a bit reluctant – I’ve wanted to suscribe but I’m not always convinced with the content of the box. It can be so disappointing sometimes! But on the other hand, it often happens to be awesome – dilemna lol

It really is a dilemma! When I first started getting them I was very impressed, but (rumor has it) that the company grew and that’s why the quality went down. I’m not sure if I’m going to cancel or not (there are other companies out there that do the exact same thing for the same price) because I keep hoping it will get better! Also, I have discovered some HG products through Birchbox (the Nuxe is one of them!)!
