Monistat Chafing Gel vs. Smashbox Photo Finish Primers

20 Dec

These two products are said to be very similar, even some people on MakeupAlley would argue that they’re exactly the same.  While the chafing gel is obviously not meant to be used as a primer, someone, somewhere, somehow decided to use this on their face.  And isn’t it always great to find a great beauty product with a low price tag?  So to say that this $7 gel works the same as the Smashbox $36 primer… is it too good to be true?

*Please note, that is a sample size of the Smashbox

Lets find out!

What is a primer?:  A primer is used under your make-up to help make the application smoother and make it last longer.  It is meant to be applied after your moisturizer.

Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel:

Like most other people, I found it very bizarre that people applied this on their face.  And even more bizarre that they said that it actually worked really well.  And I have to say… I agree with them.  This does make a very nice primer, it’s soft and smooth and my make up flows right over it.  I expected it to cause break outs, but it didn’t (at least on my skin).  I’ve read the reason this makes such a good primer is because it has dimethicone, which is contained in many high-end primers.  Overall, a very solid $7.00 purchase.

Smashbox Photo Finish Oil-Free Foundation Primer:

*sample size*

A legendary primer, if you will, in the make up world. It’s been awarded the Allure Best of Beauty Award and Total Beauty Readers Choice Award.  I was excited to receive a sample of this with one of my Sephora purchases because I had been dying to try it.  Like the chafing cream, the texture is soft and smooth when applied to my skin.  And the fact that it’s oil-free is a plus for my oily skin.

The biggest difference is that the chafing cream feels thicker when it’s on my skin.  It doesn’t feel like I caked on a bunch of product or anything, but compared to the Smashbox it feels like there’s a light extra layer on my skin.

As you can see, they look identical.  And they feel almost identical.  I can’t say that they’re the exact same because if you looked at the list of ingredients in each one you would see that they are different.

The winner:

The Monistat Chafing Relief Powder-Gel.  It is $6-$12 (depending on where you purchase) for 1.5oz.  The Smashbox Primer is $36 for 1oz.  However, since my skin is on the oily side, I do find that I have to blot more at the end of the day when using the chafing gel.  Both of these work nicely, but the products are too similar for me to pay the $30 price difference.

Glitter rating for Monistat Chafing Gel: 3.5 / 5

Glitter rating for Smashbox Photo Finish: 3 / 5

You can purchase the Monistat Chafing Gel at any drugstore or here online.  You can purchase the Smashbox Primer at any Sephora or Ulta, or here online.

I love this! I swear by the Monistat chafing gel. All my friends think I am so weird for putting it on my face but I think it’s amazing! I have several high end primers, but this is always the one I reach for.

The real question is………….if I apply the Smashbox Primer to my rear, will it prevent chafing?

I haven’t tried that. Please experiment and report back to me, stat.
