Battle of the: Rose Products

4 Oct

On my mission to find all things that make skin soft, I invested in some salves and balms to help me on my journey. They are a bit more hydrating than regular lotions, yet tend to be a little bit more sticky and thick.

Here are two products that are seemingly very similar, but oh only if it were that simple…

See who won this knock down drag out balttle…

First up, we have Smith’s Rosebud Salve.

The website descpiption:
“This cult-favorite, multi-purpose lip balm soothes dry lips, calms and heals irritation, and soothes the sting of minor burns. Try dabbing on dry elbows or knees to condition, and relieve dryness. Also an excellent remedy for the treatment of diaper rash. “

My favorite use for this one is a for cuticles and elbows.  The formula is very smooth and also works really well as a lip balm. I also really enjoy the rose smell, it’s very sweet. The container is also large enough that I can place my entire fingertip into the salve to apply to my lips, rather than getting it in my fingernails (I HATE that).

However, it does have a very shiny and slightly greasy texture (think, Vaseline) and takes 5-8 mins to soak in.

Next up is Nuance by Salma Hayek Rose Petal Hydrating Balm.

Their website description:

“Rose Petal Hydrating Balm Evening Primrose, rich in essential fatty acids, helps condition skin and ease irritation. Shea Butter helps provide long-lasting nourishment for soft, smooth skin.”

Like the one before it, this too also has a rose scent. This scent is much stronger, but since I enjoy the smell of roses it doesn’t bother me. This one also works wonderfully for hydrating lips, elbows, and cuticles. The texture of this balm is a little more concentrated, but less shiny. It also soaks into my skin faster than the RBS, so it’s a little more convenient to use during the work day.

I do have an issue with the packaging. The container isn’t wide enough to place your fingertip inside once the balm starts wearing down. Therefore, you get balm in your fingernails! Gross! And a waste of product!

While I like both products, the real winner here comes down to price. The RBS is $6 for 0.8oz. while the Nuance is $7.29 for 0.265oz.  It’s also a bit more hydrating and even though it takes longer to soak in, I find the trade off worth it.

Congrats Smith’s Rosebud Salve!
